THE TEAM 990 SHOW HOST BLOGS

Talk about a tale of two worlds.

Talk about a tale of two worlds.  Came back from a very relaxing 4 days on a beautiful beach in St. Maarten to probably the most frustrating day of gambling I have ever had.  There was a time this afternoon that I thought I was going to sweep the board.  Things were going my way and then all hell broke lose.  Even though I went 4-2 on the show, and 2-1 on Friday (for those in Toronto) I still somehow managed to lose my own money.  Not sure exactly how that happened, but it did.

Oh, I know.  Let me recap.  Jacksonville is up 24-6 with four minutes to go.  Kansas City can't trip forward for 56 minutes.  They then get a touchdown, an onside kick and another touchdown....cover.  New England misses the cover by 1/2 point.  I make a late play on the Giants, they go up 6 then let the Chargers go down the field in the last 2 minutes like a hot knife through a Giants secondary.

It could have been worse I guess, I could have been on Detroit.  Down 5, Stafford throws a pick 6 for the Seahawk cover in the last minute.  I pretty much expected that to happen in the Panther/Saints game as well.  It was one of those days for me, expecting the worse at every turn.

Which leads me to reiterate one of my biggest pet peeves in football.  When you intercept a ball up points in the last two minutes or less, and the other team has no timeouts, you fall down!  You don't try to score!  If you go down, you get the ball, you take a knee and you win the game.  If you run it back for a touchdown, the other team gets the ball and can score, get the onside kick, score again, get the onside kick, score again...you get the picture.  Why give them the ball back?  Why aren't players coached in this fact?  It is such a stat driven league.  Contracts are based on stats.  Pro Bowl appearances are based on stats.  With all the fantasy games being pushed in every commercial stats are becoming as important as the final score.  If coaches started fining players for returning picks and fumbles for touchdowns in this situation maybe players will figure it out.  Go Down!  You don't need the points, you need not to give the ball back to the opposition.

What did we learn today?  That Cincinnati is pretty decent and the Ravens are overrated.  That the public's memories are short and no matter the outcome of the game when a line is based on public perception rather than reality you have to bet on the reality.  There is no way the Ravens should have been favoured over the Bengals based on this season's performance by both teams and the Bengals domination of the Ravens on Oct. 11th.  The Bengals did to them yesterday exactly what they did to them that day last month.  Why were they made dogs?  Based on one Ravens game, the blowout of Denver.  The old axiom you are never as good or bad as you look is true.  And that is never more true than when making point spreads.

We learned that you can't lay big pointspreads on bad football teams but we already knew that.  It's just sometimes we forget.  Jacksonville dominated the game against Kansas City but didn't cover.  That is because bad teams don't know how to win.

We learned that Green Bay might be one of those bad teams.  How do you lose to the Tampa Bay Bucs wearing creamsicles for uniforms?  How bad a season must this be for the Packer fans.  There team is below average at best and they have to watch Brett Favre run away with their division.  That is the smell of rotting cheeseheads eminating from Wisconsin.

We learned that Jay Cutler may be one of the most overrated quarterbacks in the league.  Cry baby Cutler is getting what is coming to him after throwing his toys out of the crib in Denver.  I hope someone offers him box seats to Denvers first playoff game.

The dogs barked pretty loud Sunday as we predicted they might.  The underdogs went 10-2 with 6 of them winning outright. The totals were close as they have been all year.  6 overs to 6 unders.

A pretty good day on the show on Sunday, despite my bankroll not being what it should be I came out on the postive and Randall had a very good day.
