Some Monday morning musings from a crazy Sunday in the NFL
Some Monday morning musings from a crazy Sunday in the NFL...
First of all, I had a monster day. Best day I have had in alot of years. I am real glad I have a radio show, because otherwise, nobody would believe me. I will recap my selections later, just wanted to get that out of the way first. Now, I know that I have had a lot of bad Sundays, and I am the first to admit it...so after a lengthy cold streak dating back to last year and the first week of this season, please let me basque in the glory for just a paragraph or two.
Wow, what a gutsy (read: stupid) call by Mike Shanahan. Sure it worked, but who does he think he is coaching...Boise St? First of all, what a brutal, brutal call to keep the drive alive. Cutler fumbled that ball. You know it, CBS knows it, millions of viewers know it.....the only person that doesn't know it is the ref who made the call. Then, Denver scores with 24 seconds left to go down 1 point. I am sure you know the story by now. Instead of kicking the convert for the tie and overtime, he goes for broke and tries the 2 point conversion. He gets it and he is a hero. What would they be saying today if it failed? I was lucky enough to get the push as I took 1 point just before kickoff. The saving grace in the whole thing for me is that for some reason I take extra pleasure anytime Norv Turner loses. The more painful the loss, the more pleasure I seem to take from it. The last two weeks, needless to say, has been incredibly blissful. Either way, I am not sure that I remember a call like that in the NFL..at least in a game with any meaning. I am sure there have been teams with nothing to lose at the end of a season who have done it, but in week 2 in an important divisional game?.....all I can say is WOW!
I love when a plan comes together. Darren McFadden ran wild over a bad KC run defence and Oakland gets the win. I have to credit one of our emailers for getting me onto that game. He made an astute comment. 75% of public money was on KC..yet the line stayed firm. That means sharp money was on Oakland. His comment made good sense, and he got the money.
Speaking of a plan coming together. I don't think I have ever been as excited about a wager than the Patriots plus vs the Brett's...errr..Jets. Are the public so Favre fanaticle that they force the linesmakers to make such a ridiculous line? I said it all week if anybody asked me, I had it as a football Friday pick and I made it my biggest play on Sunday. I actually felt for the first time ever that I knew the result before the game started.
Speaking of knowing the result before the game started, one I missed making one of my plays, but did decide to bet it at game time, was the Arizona Cardinals over Miami. I mentioned during our segment on that game, but didn't make it one of my plays. I should have, it was never in doubt. I think the Cardinals are finally for real after a few years of people thinking they were. Ken Whisenhunt has this team playing well.
The Tennessee Titans are a better team with Kerry Collins at the helm then Vince Young. I don't think they can sit Young when he is healthy. Titan fans can only hope the Jeff Fisher has the guts to make the call that is needed when it is needed.
The Saints are pretty much the same team as last year. They will be good at home, but look like they will struggle on the road.
If the Detroit Lions were a woman, you would call them a c**k tease. They go down 21 points early again, they fight back and are actually leading the game 25-24 with about 4 minutes left....then proceed to give up 14 points in a heartbeat...to lose another game..and more importantly another cover. I am going to search the web. I am pretty sure those pictures that Matt Millen has of the Ford family must be online somewhere.
I told you....the St. Louis Rams will tear off your head and crap down your throat every time. They are a no heart, no talent bunch. I learned last year, and it a lesson I will continue to live by this year, you cannot take the points with them..even when they are big dogs at home. They cannot be trusted under any circumstances.
I guess the Bills are for real. I couldn't take them today, as I needed to see more than one game. I wasn't about to go against them..especially with a depleted Jacksonville roster, but needed to see more. They are disciplined in all facets of the game. They will be around all season.
Looks like we were accurate with the Seahawks. Their division has masked how average they are for many years. Now they are older and are exposed as the poor team they are. They gave up 33 points to the Niners......THE NINERS FOR GOODNESS SAKES!
It's tough to figure out how the favourites vs dogs did yesterday. It all depends on the number you got. Patriots closed favourites..but were dogs all week. San Diego closed a 1 point dog but were favourites all week and then pushed the +1 I would say dogs had the best of them 7-5 with two pushes. Unders beat overs 8-6.
So, here is how we all did on Sunday:
I win with Washington, Tampa under, New England, Cleveland and push San Diego.
Randall wins Pats, Buffalo and Washington. He loses Detroit, the Niner under and Minnesota.
Jorey wins Buffalo, San Fran, Pats and Washington and Cleveland. He loses Miami and pushes Carolina.
Malinsky wins the Patriots and pushes the San Diego debacle.
All in all a pretty good Sunday. Hope it was profitable for all.
