Murphy's Law: "Lest We Forget"

Tuesday was one of those days where nothing seemed to go right, but yet I didn’t feel as bad as maybe I expected to. That’s because I woke up and watched these two You Tube clips sent to me by a good friend on Veteran’s and Remembrance Day 2008.

No matter what your politics or your opinion on the war, here’s hoping you were at least able to pause and remember what so many gave or are giving for your freedom to have that opinion. Maybe you had a bad day too Tuesday or maybe you’re beginning one as you read this, but unless your health or life is in question, it can be worse and it is worse for many soldiers fighting for our freedom. “Lest we forget”.

Well, apparently the Bruins didn’t forget because yesterday prior to leaving for Chicago and their tilt with the Blackhawks on Wednesday night, many of them made it a point to discuss the sacrifices that have been made or are being made as you read this.

“You know, obviously I’m a huge advocate for peace and not happy about the war or the state of the world, but I’ll never stop appreciating what Canadian and American soldiers have done and are doing for us,” said Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference.  “It’s amazing to think of all those who have given their life for us, and made the ultimate sacrifice. Regardless of politics, you think about that and it just really makes you think how lucky we are to be playing a game as our job.

I grew up near a base in Edmonton that sends a lot of troops over to Afghanistan and you see these soldiers around town. It hits you for sure, to know where they’re going and what they have ahead of them.”

Aaron Ward actually put his thoughts and words of praise to action this past Saturday, when he paid 300 military members to attend the Bruins’ win over Buffalo at TD Banknorth Garden and then met with them after the game. The USO presented Ward with a plaque to show its appreciation for his efforts.

“It’s humbling in the capacity that I keep thinking to myself, ‘We’re able to play this game because of the fact that they obviously provide us security in life.’ I think the two most undervalued professions in the world are teachers and those in the military,” Ward said.

“It takes a special breed of bravery and dedication. That’s in some capacity why I did it. I’m very impressed and was taken aback by the amount of sacrifice they make in life. They have families too. … So that’s an honorable profession.”
