THE TEAM 990 SHOW HOST BLOGS

Just what the doctored ordered heading into the holidays.

Just what the doctored ordered heading into the holidays.  I big day on the show for me yesterday, 4 wins, a push and the moneyline winner.  Nothing like taking a pay from the man with all that shopping still to do.  Here are just a few random thoughts on a Sunday of football.

Mike Tomlin dodged a bullet yesterday.  By the Steelers coming back and winning the game against Green Bay, he got off the hook for what might be one of the craziest coaching decisions I have ever witnessed in sports, and believe me, I have seen a bunch.  After Pittsburgh scores a touchdown to go up 2 points with 4 mins to go, Tomlin calls for an onside kick.  It defies logic.  Why would you give GB the ball at the 50 when all they need is a field goal to win?  It makes no sense in any context.  "To be honest, we hadn't stopped them and they hadn't stopped us," Tomlin said.  His thinking must have been, they are going to score anyway so let's give them a short field so they can score quicker and we can get the ball back and score, which actually worked but it is quite the gamble and one I have never seen before.  That is actually what I thought Bill Bellichek was thinking with his 4th and 2 call vs Indianapolis a month or so ago, but if that is the case, you have to let the team score quickly.  New England didn't.  At least Pittsburgh did, by design or not.

Jeff Fisher's stock is also dropping rapidly.  Miami has the ball in a tie game, 2nd and 6 from it's own 8 yard line, 1 minute to go.  The Titans have all three timeouts.  Why wouldn't you use the timeouts to see if you can stop the Dolphins from getting the first down and get the ball back?  If they get the first down fine, let the clock run.  Another questionable coaching call in a league that seems to have multiple weird coaching calls every weekend.

Laying big points with bad football teams is never a smart thing.  I have said this before but once again, yesterday proved it.  If you laid points with Denver, Jets, Seattle or Houston you are licking your wounds today.  You just can't do it.  They are just not reliable enough to overcome big point spreads.

With all the talk about how bad Dallas is in December, have we forgot about the Denver Broncos?  For the second year in a row they have had a December swoon which may cost them a playoff spot.  They lost at home to Oakland in December.  To make matters worse, they lost to Jamarcus Russell orchestrating the winning drive.  That is just wrong.  It is inexcusable.

There will be no Monday morning blog next week as I will be out of town on holidays.  I want to take this time to wish everybody a happy, safe and healthy holiday season and the best of the New Year.  Thank you all for your support of our show over the last 9 years and hope that all your wagers are winning ones.

The dogs were barking very loudly yesterday and this week.  Including the Thursday and Saturday games, the dog's were 12-3.  Six of those dogs won outright.  The totals were 8-7 for the unders.
