THE TEAM 990 SHOW HOST BLOGS

Good morning

Good morning.  Thank goodness the defences forgot to show up in Arizona or we would have had the worst slate of 4 games in Wildcard round history.  All I could keep thinking during the second half of the Arizona/Green Bay game was how were either of these defenses going to stop New Orleans?  Cardinals D, you are on the clock.

On the show I talked about the bad karma that seems to finally have caught up with Bill Bellichek and the Patriots.  I would imagine giving up an 82 yard run on the first play from scrimmage, going down 24-0 by the end of the first quarter and getting completely embarrassed in your first home playoff loss in a decade would qualify.  Things just started going bad for the Patriots right after the 4th and 2 call vs Indianapolis.  It seems as if Bellichek might have lost the team at that moment.  Completely embarrassing your defence on National television, in a huge rivalry game, things just seemed to spiral downhill from there.  We will probably find out that Brady was more hurt than we were led to believe, it seems the shine has come off the Randy Moss rehabilitation project and the Pat defence needs a complete overhaul.  The Ravens are a team that is built for the playoffs.  A solid rushing attack, a fearsome defence and Ray Lewis, the most dominant defender of this generation.  He is a machine who rises to the occassion on the biggest of stages.  It was the first or second offensive play of the game yesterday for the Patriots.  Lewis came flying up the middle untouched and sacked Brady.  To me that was that set the tone of the game even more that the Ray Rice 82 yard jaunt.

There were at least 3 times yesterday that it looked like there were coaches challenges that could have been tried that were not.  Is this a playoff trend?  In the regular season coaches were throwing red flags everywhere.  Yesterday, in obvious challenge situations there were no flags to be seen.  Are we being told that timeouts are more valuable in the playoffs and coaches do not want to lose them?

Early lines for next weekend.
New Orleans 7 over Arizona.  Total 57
Indianapolis 6.5 over Baltimore. Total 45
Minnesota 2.5 over Dallas.  Total 46.5
San Diego 7.5 over Jets.  Total 42.5

In case you didn't catch it on the show yesterday.  Randall recapped our season win total predictions from before the season.  Jorey went 6-0.  I went 5-0-1.  Randall went 8-2-1.  That is a pretty impressive display.  It just goes to show, week to week anything can happen in the NFL, but with proper handicapping, over the long term, season win totals are the way to go as most things play out to script over the longer course of time.

I hit both football games on yesterdays show.
Baltimore +2.5 W
Arizona ML +130 W

Randall
New England +3.5 L
Arizona +2.5 W

Jorey
NE -3.5 L
GB -2.5 L

Dave Malinsky
Arizona +2.5 W
Kansas (college hoops) -4.5 L

Rob Longley
GB -2.5 L

Sunday sports day made it's debut yesterday.  I took a loss with the Dallas Stars as a small road dog and Randall got the win laying 1 point with the LA Clippers.  In my golf matchups, Heath Slocum beat Mark Wilson as a dog in the matchup but Pat Perez lost to Rory Sabbatini's sizzling 63.
