THE TEAM 990 SHOW HOST BLOGS

Another NFL season has come & gone...

Another NFL season has come and gone.  For me, when it comes to the football season, time really does fly.  It only seems a few scant weeks ago that we were ending our summer hiatus and getting ready to do our two NFL futures shows and now here we are, another season in the books.

Say what you want about our weekly handicapping.  Sometimes it's good and sometimes it's very bad.  We are the first to admit it.  What you cannot argue with is our pre season predictions in both win totals and future book propositions.  Randall and I both had winning tickets on the Saints to win the Superbowl before the season started at around 20-1.  That is documented on tape.  All three of us absolutely NAILED all of the season win totals, also documented if you are doubters.

As for yesterdays game, I don't think it lived up to the hype and definately wasn't as exciting as last years game, but as Superbowls go, it wasn't bad either.  I thought Jim Caldwell showed that he was a rookie coach.  He got completely out coached by Sean Payton.  I thought the three very conservative playcalls at the end of the first half when Indy didn't try to get a first down after stopping the Saints on 4th down was a big mistake.  It let the Saints turn the game around with the late field goal.

A few other bad calls by Caldwell, going for the 51 yard field goal.  Matt Stover hasn't kicked one that far since 2006.  They were better off going for it then giving up the field position. They tried to become a running team when they don't run.  Their running plays are basically short Manning passes but instead on key 4th down plays they tried to run the ball.  And finally, they left two timeouts on the board.  Their two minute drill was entirely disjointed and unlike anything we have seen from Manning in years.  That has to come from the inexperience of coach Caldwell, possibly panicking on the big stage.  Either way, Brees justifiably got the MVP but I think the biggest mismatch was on the sidelines in the coaching department.

All in all it was a pretty good day for all of us on Inside the Lines.  Randall, Dave Malinksy and I all had the Saints plus the points.

There were alot of props thrown out there yesterday.  Here is a list of winners and losers.

Steve
Under 7.5 punts.  W
Brees over Manning +20.5 yards.  Passing Yards.  L  The last drive killed me there.  Once the Saints went up by 14 I knew that one was done.
Shortest TD under 1.5 yards. L.  We did have our chances though.
Saints to convert a 4th down.  L.  Once again, they did go on 4th down, just didn't get it.
Austin Collie over 4.5 receptions.  W
Highest scoring quarter.  4th +175.  L
And my value first TD scorers Reggie Bush or Austin Collie didn't win.

Randall
Longest FG Saints  W
NO Score first +125 L

Jorey
1st TD Meechem L
1st TD Garcon at 10/1  W  Nice Win!
1st play run even  W
Austin Collie over 4.5 receptions W
Shockey receptions over 3  Push
Colts to win by 1-6 at +333 L

Dave Malinsky
NO to score first +125 L

Rob Longley
1st half under 28.5 W
3 unanswered scores No +165 L  (The yes happened twice by the way.  Tried to explain to Rob that this is a sucker bet and the yes almost always cashes...but you have to lay big juice with it.  He didn't listen).

So that's it.  Another season gone.  Don't forget though, we go right through to mid May.  Lot's more to talk about over the next 3 and a half months.  March Madness, Olympic hockey, Masters golf, World Cup of Soccer.  We will break it all down from a gambling perspective....and September is right around the corner.
